Sultamicillin is a combination antibiotic containing sultamicillin, which is a double ester of ampicillin and sulbactam. Once ingested, it is hydrolyzed to release ampicillin and sulbactam in the body. Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that enhances the effectiveness of ampicillin by protecting it from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria.
